Dear Georgetown County Students, Parents, Teachers, and Community Members,

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to the 2018-2019 school year.  It is my honor to serve as your Superintendent. Across the school district our students have advanced in several areas, including achieving a 90 percent graduation rate and receiving a record scholarship total of $16,253,995 earned by last year’s graduating class.

I am always thrilled with the talents, efforts, and abilities consistently displayed by our students in academics, athletics, and fine arts.

Our new mission statement says it best: “Georgetown County School District is to provide all students with world class knowledge and skills that prepare them for citizenship in a diverse society.”

Our goals are to prepare students for a four-year degree, have them ready to transition to work right out of high school, or prepare them to meet the high demands of military service. We have expanded career programs in the last four years with Horry Georgetown Technical College and we will begin construction on our new manufacturing center this fall. We have made a great deal of progress, but still have work to do.

I am pleased to announce that we have filled our teacher vacancies for this year.  This was a major accomplishment considering the shortage of teachers in our state and nationwide.

We have several changes that you will see as you begin the new school year. After extensive planning, design work, project bidding, etc., school construction and renovations are taking place at all locations. Some of the work is highly visible, while other much needed improvements might go unnoticed. Some of the improvements include:

  • New practice gyms
  • Additional classrooms
  • Science labs
  • Renovated athletic facilities
  • Paving
  • Roof replacement
  • HVAC replacement

    and many other reconstructions.

We will also have several academic changes, additions and improvements:

  • Advanced Placement
  • PACE Offerings
  • Distant Learning with Fuel ED Classes
  • One-on-One devices
  • Z-Space Computer labs at all high schools
  • CATE offerings and expansion of career offerings with Horry-Georgetown Technical College
  • Replacement of teachers’ interactive white boards
  • First Tee character education program
  • Y-Splash water safety lessons for all second graders

just to name a few.

We have full-day child development for all schools. Fourteen of our 18 schools serve universal breakfast and lunch free to all children. We partner with Healthy Learners and St. Christopher’s for health and medical services for those in need.

I also want to mention our safety upgrades for this year:

  • Replacement of video cameras at all schools
  • New bus cameras on all buses
  • Additional District security staff are now in place
  • School resource officers at middle and high schools
  • Off -duty officers at all locations and many public events
  • Increased random metal detector screenings will also take place at middle and high schools this year.

Finally, to assist with the District’s communication efforts with everyone, we are implementing a new website with more capabilities.  You can also follow us on Facebook.

We look forward to a great and safe school year.  Please be careful as you travel to and from school and drive safely.

Have a great school year!

 H. Randall Dozier, Ph.D.
