eLearning for McDonald Elementary Families

An eLearning day is intended to keep students safe at home during inclement weather, while providing an opportunity to make up the instructional time at a later date, designated by the district. Any eLearning day will count as a day that students attend school and prevent having to make-up that day later in the school year.

What can I do to make sure my student is successful on eLearning days?

We are asking that all McDonald families provide a safe and structured time for students to learn free from distractions. This time might look similar to how your student currently completes homework. On eLearning days, students will engage in assignments/activities that total a minimum of 200 minutes.

How will my student get the eLearning assignments that need to be complete at home?

McDonald Elementary teachers will provide assignments to students prior to eLearning days to ensure that students have access to needed materials.

  • In grades PreK-2, assignments will be provided in a packet or folder for students to take home. Students will need guidance from home to complete the assignments.

  • In grades 3-12, classwork will be assigned through Google Classroom. Students in grades 3-12 will have the opportunity to borrow a district device during these days or they can use a device of their own. All students will have the ability to download any material in the event that they do not have access to the Internet away from school.  Students with no Internet access away from school will be able to upload/sync their work when they return to school.

Will my student’s teacher be available if we have questions?

McDonald Elementary teachers will be available throughout eLearning days via virtual office hours: 8:30-10:00am and 12:30-2:00pm. During these hours, teachers will be accessible through Email, Google Classroom, and/or Remind. Your student’s teacher will identify the best method to use.

    What is my student’s responsibility?

Students are expected to complete the activities assigned by their teachers. eLearning days are about extending learning outside of the school building and not stopping instruction.

How long does my student have to complete eLearning assignments?

Students will have up to 5 days, upon their return to school, to complete eLearning assignments.  Students will be marked PRESENT if all work is completed within 5 days upon their return. Students will be marked ABSENT - UNEXCUSED if all work is NOT completed within 5 days upon their return.

I still have questions. Where can I get additional information?

Principal's Message

Dear Parents, Grandparents, Guardians, and Community Supporters:

I am honored to be appointed as the principal of McDonald Elementary School. I welcome the opportunity to serve the McDonald Elementary learning and teaching community. I look forward to working with a dynamic staff, dedicated parents and involved community members. Most of all, I look forward to working with our students and continuing the outstanding work at McDonald Elementary School.

On behalf of the staff at McDonald Elementary School, I welcome you to the 2019-2020 school year! We are excited about the start of the school year. We look forward to you and your family joining us as we "SOAR toward Excellence". We also anticipate a productive partnership with you to ensure our children will achieve their highest potential. We recognize that in order to be successful in school, our children need support from the home, school, and community. Having a strong partnership with you will make a great difference in your child’s education. As partners, we share the responsibility for our children’s success and want you to know that we will do our very best to carry out our responsibilities. We ask that you guide and support your child’s learning by ensuring that he/she:

1) Attends school daily and arrives on time, ready for the day’s learning experience
2) Completes all homework assignments given by teachers
3) Reads daily to develop a love for reading and to improve literacy skills
4) Shares school experiences with you so that you know what’s happening at school
5) Informs you if he/she needs additional support in any area or subject
6) Knows that you expect him/her to succeed in school

Please consider joining our school's PTO, volunteer program, and attend parenting workshops. Additionally, you will receive a copy of the Georgetown County School District Student handbook. Please review this with your child. If you have any questions about the rules and expectations, please feel free to contact me or discuss them with your child’s teacher. It is very important that you and your child are fully informed regarding standards related to appropriate behavior for a safe school year.

Please stop in to visit, introduce yourself, share suggestions, ideas, and concerns. My door is always open, as it will take all of us working together to assist our children in being successful.

The wonderful McDonald Elementary staff and I, feel privileged to be a part of this school family. We thank you for your support and look forward to an Outstanding and Productive school year.

Educationally yours,
Mack J. Burgess
